Kelly Hinckfuss

BA (Psych – Hons 1), M. Philosophy, M. Clinical Psychology.

What is your background?

I am a registered Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and have experience providing therapy and assessment for children, adolescents and adults. I have assisted clients who are experiencing challenges due to depression, panic attacks and anxiety, grief and loss, addiction, or who may be having difficulties adjusting to new circumstances in their lives.

Why do you enjoy perinatal psychology?

I developed a strong interest in perinatal mental health after raising my own family. I have completed training in Schema Therapy for Perinatal Mental Health Issues and Perinatal Mental Health specific training with the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE).

I appreciate how our attachment style as a child can influence our parenting approach. While there are common aspects of pregnancy, birth, and parenting that allow us to connect with others, there are experiences that can create distress and lead us to question our capability or suitability as a parent. I aim to work compassionately with her clients to resolve the issues causing them concern.

I predominantly use evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Research has shown that these active therapy approaches have positive outcomes for clients. CBT may involve some work for the client between sessions to consolidate progress towards a client’s individual goals for therapy. I also use mindfulness and relaxation techniques to support clients better.

What are your strengths?

Besides my psychology skills and training, I have much life experience to draw on. Having raised a family, I understand how each child can bring a great deal of joy and a different set of challenges to the family dynamic that we may feel stretches our available resources. I am a compassionate and caring person by nature and enjoy assisting clients to build skills and improve coping during the perinatal period.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and my dogs. I am a keen road and trail runner and enjoy hiking. One of my favourite activities is to combine running events with travel.
